Renewable Energy Project: Solar Panels plus Battery, Yamatji people

NACC NRM delivers a range of natural resource management projects steering the region towards a sustainable future. Their program areas include Aboriginal Custodianship, Biodiversity Conservation, Coastal & Marine, and Sustainable Agriculture. NACC NRM works in partnership with the community, industry and government to ensure the region’s NRM strategy (NARvis https://narvis.com.au) is implemented to support a healthy and well-functioning environment. They are based in Geraldton and serve a large and remote part of WA.

NACC NRM is proudly one of 54 regional Natural Resource Management (NRM) organisations around Australia, and one of seven in Western Australia. Regional NRMs were established in the early 2000s by the Australian Government to deliver community-based projects to strategically address environmental degradation at a regional or landscape scale.

NACC NRM recently purchased their office building and, as an environmental organisation, are looking to make their operations as sustainable as possible. CORENA analysed their interval data (electricity use measured every 30 minutes) and found there was some overnight use due to unavoidable air conditioning required in their server room. This overnight use coupled with the ability to shift to a time of use tariff and maximise the utilisation of a small battery meant that in this case a battery was financially viable for them. Western Australia is experiencing very high levels of rooftop solar adoption. Importantly, the battery will store solar energy during the day and reduce the use of power from the grid in evening peak times playing a part in allowing for greater uptake of renewable energy across the grid.

The solar system has been sized to allow for the charging of an electric vehicle in their fleet in the future.

This project will involve installing a 32kW Solar system and 16kWh battery

“NACC NRM is excited to take this next step in reducing our organisational emissions and contributing positively to a net zero WA. We are especially grateful to the team at CORENA for their support in making this happen. CORENA has been instrumental in helping us get the right system for our needs now and hopefully into the future.
