Renewable Energy Project : Solar and Battery with integrated DC EV charger, Bundjalung Country
HeyDay (formerly Byron Shire Respite Service) is a not-for-profit organisation specialising in dementia care and cognitive support. Working alongside carers and clients, they develop practical, non-therapeutic strategies that remain flexible and adapt as those needs change.
The service provides a diverse range of activities and programs designed to promote social interaction and independence. Key offerings include centre-based day respite, social group activities, and personalised one-on-one support, alongside specialised programs for people living with dementia. By partnering with local transport services, HeyDay Supports creates a comprehensive support network that empowers clients to remain in their own
homes while providing vital relief and peace of mind for their carers.
HeyDay Supports are committed to sustainability. They have purchased 2 electric vehicles for client transport resulting in significant fuel savings and they have reported the smooth and quiet ride has been more comfortable for their clients with sensory issues. They are currently working towards purchasing a 12 seater electric bus.
This solar and battery project will not only allow them to reduce their carbon emissions, electricity and fuel costs the battery will allow for backup in power outages. This will assist with continuity of service in extreme weather events. The importance of this was driven home during Tropical Cyclone Alfred when the service experienced extended power outages.
Another unique aspect of this project is the 12kW DC electric vehicle charger. The inverter chosen for this project integrates a DC charger which allows their vehicles to be charged at approximately double the rate of a typical AC home charger. With the addition of their new electric bus this will allow the use of their vehicles to be maximised.
The project is particulary special to Corena as it has been majority funded via a bequest from Corinna Pereira, a valued committee member who passed away in 2024. You can read about Corinna and her legacy here.
