What Is 1% for the Planet?
1% for the Planet is an accountability partner for businesses that are ready to reject business as usual and give back to impact partners making a difference around the globe. Started in 2002 by Yvon Chouinard, founder of Patagonia, and Craig Mathews, founder of Blue Ribbon Flies, their members have given hundreds of millions of dollars to environmental partners to date.
Being accepted as a partner means the 1% for the Planet team has reviewed and verified Corena’s impact, confirming that our revolving fund model is an effective and credible place for business giving to land.
Why This Partnership Matters for Corena
Since 2013, Corena has transformed everyday generosity into long‑lasting climate action. Every donation becomes a zero‑interest loan that funds:
- solar power installations
- energy‑efficiency upgrades
- electrification projects
- electric vehicles for community organisations
When a loan is repaid, the funds are immediately reinvested into the next project. One dollar keeps working, keeps lending, and keeps cutting emissions.
To date, our revolving fund has delivered:
- $2 million in interest‑free loans
- 8,443 MWh of grid electricity avoided
- 5,584 tonnes of carbon emissions cut
- $326,000 saved annually by community organisations
